• Ages: 4–18 years old
Since 1998, MacGuffin Theatre & Film Company has worked with young actors between 4 and 18 and has operated as a nonprofit theater company for 27 years. The company presents 16 productions each season and has produced over 120 theater productions, 14 films, 1 documentary, and dozens of summer camps. It reports having taught, encouraged, and inspired over 6,000 young people from many ethnic groups and economic levels, and a total of 8,000 students since 1998.
The instructors at MacGuffin Theatre & Film Company are described as some of the best actors in the Philadelphia area. The Artistic Director is John Rea. The leadership has created a family-like atmosphere where students can feel free to take chances and develop a strong sense of self.
The company states that its mission is to grow actors and to give young people a place to experience the entire acting process of theater and film, performing in original and adapted works that speak to the challenges that face its students and community. It describes its education and producing company as inclusive and as creating a supportive, dynamic space for students as they discover their identity, gain self-confidence, and become advocates for the arts.
MacGuffin Theatre & Film Company notes that its alumni have gone on to study acting at Temple University, Emerson College, New York University, Columbia University, Syracuse University, and Northwestern University. Several students have acted in regional theaters such as Wilma Theatre, Walnut Street Theatre, Philadelphia Theatre Company, and InterAct Theatre Company, on Broadway in productions including The Humans, Beauty and the Beast, Speech and Debate, and Scarcity, and in Hollywood films including Spanglish, The To Do List, Margaret, The Good Student, Please Give, and The Village, as well as in commercials.
MacGuffin Theatre & Film Company reserves the right to use photos and videos taken during classes and performances for promotional materials and on its official social media pages, and it has an opt-out policy regarding all photos and videos.
One alum, Elena Eisenstadt, states that MacGuffin taught her how to talk to anyone, gave her confidence in herself, instilled the importance of a serious work ethic, and introduced her to friends from all over the city, some of whom she is still close with. A parent, Tracey Tanenbaum, states that through MacGuffin, her daughter discovered her “inner ham” and experienced a sense of belonging that has enriched her life and well-being.
