Milky Way Farm Camps and Educational Programs take place on a historic dairy farm that has been owned and operated by the Matthews family since 1902 and has been a farmstead since the 1760s. The farm is home to about 30 Holstein-Friesian milking cows and 30 young stock of calves and heifers, as well as sheep, pigs, and chickens. Most of the milk is sold to the Land O’ Lakes Cooperative, and the rest is pasteurized and bottled for sale at the farm or used to make ice cream for Chester Springs Creamery, which manufactures and retails ice cream made from the farm’s milk. The farm offers grass-fed and hormone-free products, and fresh brown eggs are available at the Farmhouse Porch or Creamery when it is open, with e-gift cards available for the Creamery. Only service dogs on a leash are allowed on the property for the safety of the animals.

Milky Way Farm has a long history of public programs, including opening the farm for pumpkin picking about one month each year, growing and selling pumpkins and squash in October, giving farm tours to schoolchildren and families, and hosting birthday parties year-round. The farm was placed in the Chester County Farmland Preservation program in 1997, launched its website in 1998, opened Chester Springs Creamery in 2001, and began selling eggs and other products to the community six years later. The leadership team includes Carolyn Matthews Eaglehouse, who manages the making and selling of ice cream, Thomas and Jenna Matthews, who focus on sharing information about where food comes from and issues facing dairy farmers and agriculture, and Tim and Jane Matthews Ferris, who support a cooperative arrangement providing fresh produce from local farmers and honey products. The stated mission is to work in harmony with the land and animals, promote community engagement, and support sustainability for future generations through sustainable agriculture and educational activities for young and old.
