The Adams County Arts Council’s mission is to cultivate an arts-rich community. The organization was incorporated in 1993, was designated by the Adams County Commissioners in 2004 as the county’s official arts in education provider, and opened its Arts Education Center in 2011 after completing a $1.8 million project. The leadership team includes Managing Director Lori McCullough, Development and Marketing Manager Kylie Stone, Program and Gallery Director Becca Riley, Education & Programs Assistant Brittinay Smith, Community Retail Liaison Susan Henry, Administrative Assistant Téa Antigiovanni, Communications and Outreach Coordinator Grace Harbour, and Marketing Consultant Lisa Cordiano. The Arts Education Center is a 10,000 sq. ft. facility that includes inviting spaces for arts and culinary classes, artist studios, a gallery for local art, a pottery and glass workshop, and a reception hall with a full kitchen for community and private events, and the facility breaks down barriers of cost with scholarships for low-income youth and senior citizens. The Adams County Arts Council has a membership of more than 400, its programs typically reach an audience of 20,000 people each year, and it is supported in part by the PA Council on the Arts. The organization works with more than 30 schools, nonprofit organizations, social service agencies, and local governments, and has partnerships with more than 30 education, arts, policy-making, health, and social service organizations. Its programs address community needs including economic development and personal wellness, with an emphasis on outreach to at-risk populations throughout Adams County, and it uses creativity throughout the region to develop and strengthen connections with residents, local businesses, policy-makers, and tourists. One testimonial from Danielle Thompson, an Autistic Support Teacher at Biglerville High School, states that this work has been beneficial to students, that parents report students come home talking about what they did, that students engage with music and art and learn skills that can be difficult to reach through traditional talk therapy, and that students who have experienced increased stress say the activities allow them to relax after two years of feeling overwhelmed.
