PIC Afterschool and Youth Programs includes activities such as the Munch, Mingle, and Move Event, The Garden Party, Alphabet Safari, and Music Monday. In one Music Monday activity, students designed their own musical instruments using paper plates and dried materials. In another activity, afterschool students at Nicely Elementary learned about good oral hygiene and developing good dental habits to promote healthy teeth and gums.
PIC Afterschool and Youth Programs is part of an organization that operates over two dozen programs through three divisions: Early Childhood Development, Education, and Workforce Development. The Education division provides before-and-afterschool programs for in-school youth, and over 300 full-time and part-time professionals provide services across the organization. Over the past four decades, the organization has served over 300,000 individuals of all ages, and the PIC Afterschool Program is funded through the Nita M. Lowey 21st Century Community Learning Centers (21st CCLC) initiative and administered by the state of Pennsylvania.
The organization’s mission is “Building tomorrow’s workforce in southwestern Pennsylvania through early childhood development, employment and training, education, and business services.” It is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, a state certified Pearson Vue and GED test center, and has been identified by the Westmoreland-Fayette Workforce Investment Board as the Title 1 provider of services. It is also described as a premier provider of job placement and workforce development in Westmoreland County and the primary provider of welfare-to-work programs and case management services in Westmoreland and Fayette counties.
The organization was founded in 1983 and has expanded its services over time, including becoming the grantee for multiple Head Start and Early Head Start programs, creating its first Drone Education Program in 2018, administering a Youth CDL program in 2019, opening three Early Childhood STEM Zones in 2020, beginning Digital Literacy classes in 2021, opening the PIC Kidz Zone child care center in 2022, and beginning to offer C.L.E.P. testing in 2023 while celebrating its 40th anniversary. The leadership team includes Shujuane L. Martin – CEO/President; Rachel Stickle – Chief Financial Officer; Stacy Harris – VP of Early Childhood; Nancy Austin – VP of Business Relations; Rosemarie Zajdel-McKay – Controller; Shannon Singosky – VP of Education & Workforce Development; and Peter Ennis – Solicitor.
