Harrisburg Area YMCA Youth Programs include swimming lessons, the Teen Achievers Club, health and fitness classes, summer camps for all ages, and organized sports such as fencing, boxing, basketball, and swimming. The programs also connect with trips for Active Older Adults through the broader Harrisburg Area YMCA offerings.
The Harrisburg Area YMCA was founded in 1854 and was officially established on December 12, 1854 as the eighth YMCA in the United States. It was the first YMCA in the country to provide lodging for young men. The YMCA’s swim lesson program marked its 100th anniversary in 2006. The YMCA Center for Healthy Living was founded in 2016. The mission of the Harrisburg Area YMCA is to provide services to aid in the spiritual, mental and physical development of each person, enabling them to be beneficial and contributing members of society. The Harrisburg Area YMCA serves more than 50,000 members and 200,000 individuals a year and maintains locations throughout Dauphin and Cumberland counties. The Harrisburg Area YMCA grants over $500,000 worth of scholarships to families in the Harrisburg area and is described as one of the largest providers of quality child care in the Harrisburg area. The Y is described as the largest organization offering swimming lessons to members of the community. The YMCA Center for Healthy Living conducts a Health Equity Tour and a Community Action Tour across Pennsylvania that focus on access to health resources, health education, health screenings, vaccinations at select events, and distribution of resources to those in need, in partnership with the Pennsylvania Department of Health, local YMCAs, food banks, pantries, and other community-based organizations.
