About
iCan Shine Programs offers iCan Bike, iCan Swim, and iCan Dance for individuals with disabilities. The iCan Bike program focuses on cycling skills and participation with two-wheel bike riding for children with neurodevelopmental disabilities and on learning to ride a conventional two-wheel bicycle. The organization also offers swim programs and dance programs through its iCan Swim and iCan Dance programs.
• Schedule: iCan Shine conducts approximately 100 five-day iCan programs each year, and participants in the iCan Bike program attend for 75 minutes each day during the five-day program.
iCan Shine is a 501(c)(3) charitable nonprofit organization. The organization began in 2007 with the iCan Bike program and introduced iCan Swim and iCan Dance programs in 2015. It collaborates with local organizations and individuals, called program hosts, to conduct approximately 100 five-day iCan programs in 35 states and Canada each year, serving nearly 3,000 people with disabilities annually. Across its history, iCan Shine has successfully taught approximately 30,000 people with disabilities to ride a conventional two-wheel bicycle, with approximately 80% of iCan Bike participants learning to ride independently at least 75 feet with no assistance by the end of the five-day program while attending for only 75 minutes each day, and the remaining 20% making progress and leaving programs with family members trained as spotters. iCan Shine states that its mission is to provide quality learning opportunities in recreational activities for individuals with disabilities and to create an environment where each person is empowered to maximize their individual abilities. The organization offers camp locations across North America, and its programs are hosted by local hosts in various communities.
Parents have shared that their children learned to ride a two-wheel bike during the iCan Bike program and described the program as flowing smoothly, with guidance on what bike to buy and progress from non-bike rider to riding a two-wheel bike in five days. One parent reported that a 14-year-old son attended the iCan Bike program in Charlotte in June 2019 and came away being able to ride a two-wheel bike, and another parent reported that their son can now ride a bike independently and referred to attending a graduation day as a proud parent.
