Animal Friends began in 1943 and has been serving the Pittsburgh community for more than 80 years. The organization describes its mission as rescuing, rehabilitating and rehoming animals in crisis, ensuring healthy pets through education, advocacy and affordable services, and inspiring a community where the animal-human bond is celebrated and nurtured. It serves the Pittsburgh community through rescue, rehabilitation, adoption, affordable vet care, supportive services, training, education and volunteer opportunities. Animal Friends operates as a full-service companion animal welfare organization on a 75 acre campus and offers programs such as the Chow Wagon Pet Food Bank, the Therapets program, and low cost or no cost services including spay/neuter, rabies shots, initial immunizations, disease testing and flea treatment. For Community Vaccine Clinics, no appointment is needed, but families are asked to bring prior veterinary records.
Parents and community members have shared experiences such as attending Small Dog Social to support a chihuahua’s anxiety, adopting cats and dogs, and using the low cost or no cost veterinary services. Testimonials describe clean and organized facilities, detailed adoption information including clinical history and behavioral assessments, and staff and volunteers who are described as amazing, efficient and very well run.
