Steel City Codes offers after-school programs, summer camps, community events, and virtual hackathons focused on learning computer science. Students take part in one-hour weekly chapter sessions during the school year, learn Java or Python through a Steel City Codes curriculum, and can join hackathon competitions where they create a project from scratch centered around a theme. Summer camp students work in Intro, Intermediate, or Advanced levels in Java or Python and develop a personalized final project on the last day of camp.

Steel City Codes is a nationally reaching official 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization on a mission to promote inclusivity in STEM by educating elementary and middle school students in computer science through after-school programs, summer camps, community events, and virtual hackathons. High school mentors and volunteers with experience in computer science are trained by Steel City Codes to teach the Java and Python curriculum and support a peer-mentorship program that pairs younger students with high school volunteers. The program has 80+ chapters, 60+ summer camps, 10+ hackathons, and has worked with 20,000+ students, with chapters for elementary and middle school students, summer camps for students in grades 4–8, and hackathons for students in grades 6–12. Hackathon teams can compete in teams of up to four, pitch their projects to a panel of judges, and have a chance to win sponsored prizes, and the programs aim to create a comfortable environment where students are free to learn and experiment with computer science. Steel City Codes looks for passionate high school students to start chapters at local elementary or middle schools, and major companies and community organizations sponsor everything that Steel City Codes has to offer each year.
