About

Marathon Kids is a running program where kids take part in activities such as running, running club, running challenges, and games like freeze tag. The program uses tools to track laps, miles, and active minutes, and includes options like running track and field on GoNoodle and other physical education programming and physical activity. All runner effort is equated to miles, and participant effort is recorded by scanning ID cards, manual entry, or approving parent-submitted miles.

• Ages: 5–18 years old
• Price: Our program is 100% FREE and includes access to our scanning app and digital reporting platform.

Marathon Kids is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization with a program designed to combat youth inactivity by encouraging children to engage in regular physical activity through running. The nonprofit offers free physical education programming through Marathon Kids Connect, a cloud-based PE and run club management platform that includes a mobile app for digital activity tracking. Marathon Kids Connect includes a flexible coaching model that tracks laps, miles, and active minutes and uses a digital platform with a mobile scanning app for quick recording and a reporting dashboard. Programming is built on six evidence-based pillars for long-term healthy behavior adoption: Goal Setting, Social Support, Tracking, Celebrating, Modeling the Way, and Rewarding, and a goal of completing 4 marathons in a season was added to support these pillars. Marathon Kids is on a mission to get kids moving and reports that over 1,000 schools and 300,000 kids across the country use the Marathon Kids program, with over 518,000 kids empowered to achieve their goals last year. Marathon Kids is proud to partner with Brooks Running to get kids moving, and also offers The Girls Movement, a dedicated running program for 4th–8th grade girls that includes engaging lesson plans, fun running challenges, and a supportive community.

Marathon Kids was started in Austin, Texas as a running program for kids that used paper logs to motivate and boost physical activity in 1995. Two ICEF schools based in Inglewood, California partnered with Marathon Kids to instill a joy for running in their students. Testimonials from teachers, principals, parents, and students at ICEF Inglewood Academy, ICEF Innovation, and Inglewood Elementary describe students setting short-term goals like running 2 miles twice a week and long-term goals like completing an entire marathon of 26.2 miles, using pedometers, joining a running club, and taking part in before- or after-school activities connected to the program.
