Swim Safety Camp focuses on safe water skills and safe behaviors in and around the water, including safe open water swimming and keeping water safe from pollution, and campers are taught survival techniques and accident prevention in and around the water. Each camp day in Swim Safety and Sharks & Mermaids Camps includes a 30-minute structured swim lesson with groups of no more than 4 swimmers to 1 instructor, and Fitness camp includes a 45-minute swim fitness workout, with campers grouped based on swim skills and age-appropriate structured activities.
• Ages: 5–14 years old
• Schedule: Camps run Monday–Thursday from 9:00am–12:00pm in weekly sessions between June 2 and July 31, with specific weeks varying by location.
• Price: Swim Safety Camp, Sharks & Mermaids Camp, Water Polo Camp, and Swim Fitness Camp each cost $220 per week, and Water Polo Camp and Swim Fitness Camp also offer a $55 per day drop-in rate pending availability.
Each child’s swim level must be evaluated prior to camp to determine the activity group, and group lessons have up to 4 swimmers per class in a teaching pool configuration that provides a 10 ft by 20 ft space for each class. To safely participate in the Summer Swim Safety Camp and Mermaid Camp, swimmers are required to evaluate to the White level or above, and Swim Safety Camp requires campers to be 5 years or older by May 2025 while Sharks & Mermaids Camp requires campers to be 5 years or older by May 2024. Water Polo Camp is geared toward inexperienced, beginner water polo players between the ages of 9–14 years, requires swimmers to be 9–14 years old by June 1 and at least a Novice 2 level swimmer, and includes roughly 75 minutes of in-water training and instruction in water polo each day; Swim Fitness Camp requires swimmers to be 9–14 years old by June 1 and at least an Intermediate level swimmer. For camps, each camper should bring a healthy snack that does not require refrigeration or heating and a bottle of water, with all items labeled with the child’s name, and if a child has an allergy, parents should notify the camp counselors. Only adults listed on the child’s camp registration form as Authorized Adults may pick up the child, and these adults must bring a valid photo ID; adults picking up children must be listed as Authorized Adults and present a valid photo ID. No early drop-off or late pick-up is available for camps.
Swimming coaches and swim lesson instructors have completed Waterloo Swim School’s Instructor Training Certification Program, which covers the program’s philosophy, teaching style, and practical application, and instructors are certified in Community First Aid and CPR. Waterloo’s Summer Camp mission is to help ensure water safety and awareness and cultivate a love for all physical activities in and around water. Waterloo Swimming offers related programs such as Masters, Kid Fitness, Special Needs classes, Blitz classes, Waterloo Babies, Waterloo Toddlers, Swim Fit, Swim Team, Stroke School, Summer League Prep, adult swim lessons, Waterloo Aerobics Class, and a Special Olympics Team, as well as free Swim Lesson and Swim Fitness evaluations on Saturdays between 12:30pm and 1:30pm at all locations with no appointment needed, and free swim team evaluations on Saturdays at the 620 and Round Rock locations. The owner and director of Waterloo Swimming is Mike Varozza, whose swimming career includes NCAA Swimming All-American, US Swimming 1988 Olympic Trials Qualifier, and current US Masters Swimming National and World Record Holder, and whose coaching career has been influenced by Jay Fitzgerald and Dick Jochums; after earning a BA and MBA, he worked in the transportation and logistics industry in California before moving to Texas with Dell from 2000 to 2017. Gwyn Varozza is described as the Queen of All Things Out of the Water. Waterloo Swimming has many satisfied clients receiving a rating of 5 out of 5 stars, broke into the Top 5 in Texas Age Group Swimming in 2022, and won its first Sectionals Team Title in March 2025. Mike, Jim Sauer, Ande Rasmussen, and David Guthrie teamed up to break both the 400 Free and 400 Medley relay World Record times for long course meters in their age group, and later broke the 200 Medley and 400 Medley relay World Records for short course meters. One parent testimonial states that Waterloo has been a productive and encouraging experience over four years for three children, notes that teachers support safe swimming practices and a love of the water and the sport, and says that each coach has been equally dedicated to swimmers in Swim Fit and to a younger swimmer starting in purple, concluding that Waterloo is the best school in the area.
