Coach B's Summer Science Caravan
Texas A&M University, 400 Bizzell St, College Station, TX 77840
About
Coach B's Summer Science Caravan gives campers 5 days of real-life STEM activities, including more than 10 field trips in a single week. Campers take part in hands-on activities such as flight simulators, conducting experiments with a medical doctor, skydiving in a wind tunnel, and touring places like NASA, I Fly, and the Texas A&M Veterinary School.
• Ages: 11–14 years old
• Schedule: Camps run weekly from Monday through Friday.
For the past eight years, the science camp has taken students anywhere that real life STEM related activities take place. The program’s mission states that STEM experiences should be more than just something a child sees in a textbook, that the middle school years are a time for exploring and investigating, and that Coach B's Summer Science Caravan will help students find and explore their dreams.
Each activity is facilitated by an industry expert, and each van is limited to 14 students to keep camper-to-leader ratios small. The camp includes real-time updates via the Remind 101 app. All teachers are First-Aid, CPR, and AED certified.
Dale “Coach B” Bransom is the Owner and Camp Leader – North and is a veteran educator of 30 years who retired in 2020 after spending 23 years at Riverwood MS in Kingwood, earned a Master’s Degree in Educational Administration in 2009/2010, and was named Humble ISD Secondary District Teacher of the Year. Joe Watson, Camp Leader – North, has degrees in Meteorology and Secondary Education, certifications in G/T and Earth and Life Sciences, and over 27 years of experience teaching middle school and junior high students. Nykeba Jones, Camp Leader – West, earned her bachelor’s degree from Spelman College and her master’s degree from Sam Houston State University, is a member of the Pi Sigma Alpha Political Science Honor Society, is a government faculty member at San Jacinto College’s Central Campus, has 17 years of elementary and middle school instruction experience in Houston ISD, has served as a Math Instructional Specialist and a STEM Instructional Specialist, and has been recognized as teacher of the year as well as UIL Elementary Coordinator of the Year. Ken Fletcher, Camp Leader – West, holds a Master of Science Degree from the University of Houston-Victoria, has been a teacher in public education for the past 22 years, has been teaching in the Lamar Consolidated ISD for the past 22 years, and currently teaches 7th and 8th grade science at Antionette Reading Junior High School and coaches the Reading JHS Science Olympiad Team. Chad Warner, Camp Leader – North, has been teaching for 6 years and coaching for 2, taught Geometry and Pre-AP Algebra II at Stafford High School, and has spent the last 4 years teaching Pre-Algebra and 2 years coaching at Humble Middle School. Delaney Bridger, Camp Leader – West, studied Middle School Math/Science Education at Texas A&M University, has over 9 years of teaching experience including science and coaching, and was recognized as Teacher of the Year at Memorial Parkway in 2022–2023. Travis Park, Camp Leader – West, earned his Bachelor’s of Science from A&M University and has over 9 years of teaching experience.
Parent testimonials describe the camp as “an amazing opportunity to learn new things and meet new people” and note that campers “loved learning with hands on demonstrations, participations, and all with their friends,” with highlights including I Fly, touring NASA, and the Texas A&M Veterinary School. One parent from 2022 states, “If you decide to send your student, you won't regret it!” Another parent from 2021 and 2022 shares that hearing their child’s excitement each night was “priceless” and that each year has been a little different because Coach B “knows what the kids really like and enjoy so they get the most out of those core experiences that have not changed.”
