About
Compudopt Tech Education Programs offers activities that include Computer Giveaway, Tech Education, Tiny Techs, Early Adopters, STEAM Team, Learn2Earn, Pathways, Digital Skills Building, and STEM Training. The program includes high-quality, hands-on, project-based after-school programming that aligns with high-demand careers. Through the Computer Giveaway program, selected families receive refurbished computers that are loaded with essential software.
• Ages: 6–18 years old
• Price: “she didn’t have to pay a penny” for a computer received through the Computer Giveaway
Compudopt was founded in 2007. Its mission is to provide technology access and education to under-resourced youth and their communities. The program recycles donated computers, refurbishes them, and loads them with essential software before giving them to selected families, and its model keeps computers out of landfills and gives them a second life with a young learner without access to technology at home. It also helps families find no or low-cost Internet solutions and provides free Tech Education to youth and adults, as well as offering programs in multiple U.S. states including California.
Compudopt has partnered with Micro Center, a leading electronics retailer, to accept laptops and desktops in working condition at any of their 30 stores nationwide, and through this partnership Micro Center donates computers, resources, and expertise to support Compudopt’s work in underserved communities. Leadership for Compudopt includes President & Founder Jonathan Osha and Chief Executive Officer Megan Steckly, along with a board and executive team that includes roles such as Chief Operating Officer, Chief Financial Officer, Chief Experience Officer, multiple Vice Presidents, and Emeritus Members.
In one impact story, a middle school student in Harris County named Victoria shared that her family had never had a computer, so for school projects she would have to ask a friend or go to a public library. She said that she wanted to use a computer for her own studies and to help her siblings learn, and that she knew a computer would give her family a better shot at success. Through the generosity of donors and the work of volunteers, Victoria’s family received their first computer in August 2015, and she did not have to pay a penny for it.
