Since its inception in 1910, more than 130 million young men and women have participated in Scouting America’s youth programs, and more than 35 million adult volunteers have helped carry out Scouting America’s mission. The mission of Scouting America is to prepare young people to make ethical and moral choices over their lifetimes by instilling in them the values of the Scout Oath and Law. Traditional Scouting programs are operated by local chartering organizations, such as religious institutions, clubs, civic associations, and educational organizations, which implement the Scouting program for youth within their communities. Scouting America is chartered by Congress to serve the nation’s youth, is non-partisan, and its programs are focused on character development, leadership, and outdoor exploration. The organization is composed of more than 1 million youth members between the ages of 5 and 21 and more than 628,000 volunteers in local councils throughout the United States and its territories, and it has four High-Adventure Bases: Northern Tier, Philmont Scout Ranch, Sea Base, and Summit Bechtel Reserve. Scouting America welcomes all of America’s youth, including girls and young women, into its programs and states that Scouting is something the whole family can experience together.

Parents and leaders describe Scouting America Youth Programs as family-based and inclusive. One parent says that Scouting has provided their only son with “a fantastic group of siblings who care for and support him.” Another parent says, “Scouting is a way of life – a way of having time with family to share good times and memories,” and others note that “Scouting is for everybody – it really is a family-based program,” and that “Scouting makes the most of the time we have with our children.”
