H. E. Butt Foundation Outdoor School offers hands-on, highly active activities that include close encounters with rivers, landscape, and wildlife. The program includes engaging recreational activity and 3-day, 2-night school retreats. It also offers a Summer Workshop Series and an Associate Program.

In 1954, the H. E. Butt Foundation acquired 1,900 acres north of Leakey, Texas. The Outdoor School partners with Title I school communities, including more than 20 qualifying Title I schools per year. It partners with San Antonio schools and other like-minded organizations within the San Antonio region that share its focus on getting people outdoors and developing a restored appreciation for natural spaces. The Outdoor School Associate program is a 2-year paid program. The program states that it is best to leave electronics at home and that there is no Internet or cell phone reception in the Canyon.

Butt Foundation Outdoor School partners with Title I school communities to provide transformative and educational overnight experiences and states that, through these experiences, it hopes to cultivate wholeness in school communities through deeper connections to each other and to the natural world.
The leadership team includes Kimberley Williams, Director of Community Camping Programs; Christopher Richardson, Assistant Director of Outdoor School; Barrett Hardy, Programs and Activity Coordinator for Adventure Recreation; Luke Holland, Assistant Director of Adventure Recreation; and Andrea Lechin, Outdoor School Associate. Kimberley Williams graduated from East Texas Baptist University with a degree in Speech Communication. Christopher Richardson has a B.S. in Recreation, Park, and Tourism Sciences from Texas A&M University. Barrett Hardy is a graduate of Texas A&M University with a degree in Recreation Park & Tourism Sciences. Luke Holland graduated from Texas A&M University with B.S. and M.S. degrees in Recreation, Park, and Tourism Sciences. Andrea Lechin recently completed an undergraduate degree in psychology at Texas A&M University.
