H. E. Butt Foundation Outdoor School offers overnight school retreats that take place over three days and two nights. The program includes Outdoor School Associate and Adventure Rec Associate staff roles that support these retreats as part of the Outdoor School program.

The H. E. Butt Foundation acquired 1,900 acres for its programs in 1954. The Outdoor School partners with Title I school communities, including San Antonio schools and other organizations in the San Antonio region that focus on getting people outdoors and building appreciation for natural spaces. The program’s stated mission is to partner with Title I school communities to provide transformative and educational overnight experiences and to cultivate wholeness in school communities through deeper connections to each other and to the natural world. The program notes that there is no Internet or cell phone reception in the Canyon and that it is best to leave electronics at home.
The leadership team includes Kimberley Williams, Director of Community Camping Programs; Luke Holland, Assistant Director of Adventure Recreation; Barrett Hardy, Programs and Activity Coordinator for Adventure Recreation; Jessica “Jess” Armendariz, Outdoor School Associate; and Josh Clayton, Adventure Rec Associate. Staff credentials include degrees in Speech Communication, Recreation, Park, and Tourism Sciences, and Ecology and Conservation Biology from East Texas Baptist University and Texas A&M University. Testimonials and guiding statements connected to the program include quotes from Mary Holdsworth Butt about opening new fields of interest through outdoor study, work, play, and fun; developing resourcefulness, self-reliance, initiative, and creativeness through basic experiences; and promoting good health practices through a wholesome environment, supervision, group action, and motivation.
