About
Camp of the Hills offers faith-based summer camps where campers take part in camping, swimming, fishing, archery, and a ropes course. Engaging experiences at Camp of the Hills include outdoor adventures that involve leadership, teamwork, relationship building, self reflection, spiritual development, and belonging. The camp uses a pool and a concrete swimming hole as part of its water activities during the camp experience.
• Ages: 8–18 years old
• Schedule: 8 sessions of week-long faith-based summer camps for youth ages 8–18
Camp of the Hills began in the summer of 1990 when two men of faith brought eight inner city kids from Houston’s 5th Ward to the shores of Lake Travis for a few days of camping, swimming, and fishing, and since 1990, over 35,000 children have been introduced to the love of Christ through this ministry. The mission of Camp of the Hills is to create a space and an invitation to see, hear, know, and experience God, with a stated purpose to love well, pursue excellence, partner with the community, and live out God’s goodness at camp, with a focus on making camp experiences accessible and supportive of the needs of youth from low-income and vulnerable communities across Texas. Unique offerings include four 2-week discipleship and service camps (Poiema) for youth ages 15–18 who are interested in being counselor assistants, Outdoor Education programming for PreK–12th grade available in half-day, full-day, overnight, and week-long formats, and a 9-month Immerse Internships program for young adults ages 18 and older that combines work training, life skills, and spiritual development.
The leadership team includes Executive Director Kevin Ludlum, Operations Director Alicen Ohorán, Camp Ambassador Michael Thames, Office Administrator D’Ann Herrod, Retreats and Rentals Coordinator Erin McGee, Outdoor Education Director Kayley Lowe, Booking Coordinator Alex Flores, Summer Coordinator Brayden Gill, Kitchen Coordinator Daniel Heo, Community Relations and Recruiting staff member Fina Coldiron, and Facilities and Grounds staff member Teodulo Robledo. Staff members bring a range of experience, including over 25 years of combined experience in youth and camp ministry from Michael, over 30 years of experience in education and ministry from D’Ann along with degrees in early childhood, elementary, and special education and a degree from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary as a licensed minister, and classroom and education degrees from universities such as Hardin-Simmons, Oklahoma Christian University, Texas A&M University, Stephen F. Austin State University, and Sam Houston State University. The staff is specially trained to engage with a broad spectrum of social, emotional, and behavioral development needs so that campers from vulnerable backgrounds can receive support during their week at camp.
During the school year, Camp of the Hills works directly with teachers and schools to offer field trips that connect academic content with outdoor activities and nurture students’ relationship with nature. The camp’s cabins, cottages, kitchens, meeting rooms, and grounds are available throughout the year for events and retreats such as business meetings, staff development, church retreats, and family reunions, and renting these facilities during the off-season helps make summer camps and field trips more accessible to those from low-income communities. Camp of the Hills operates as a non-profit organization with leadership and guidance from a Board of Directors that meets throughout the year, and the camp operates on a lean annual operating budget with a handful of paid staff, with approximately 80% of operating funds coming from charitable gifts and thousands of volunteer hours. The camp states a value for community partnership and recognizes and embraces opportunities for others to be involved in its ministry work.
