• Ages: 5–18 years old
• Schedule: Private lessons once weekly in 30-, 45-, or 60-minute sessions, with lessons offered seven days a week throughout a 47-lesson year from September through August
Rockwall School of Music is described as the largest music school in the greater Rockwall area, with an active enrollment of over 900 students and flexible scheduling options. The school has 56 highly qualified music teachers and offers the largest selection of university-trained teaching faculty in one location, along with full-time professional customer service seven days a week. Russ and Karen Porter serve as owners and both hold bachelor’s degrees in music from Ouachita Baptist University and master’s degrees in music from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary and the University of North Texas, respectively.
The school has been helping families make music for over 30 years and marked a 30-year anniversary, with Russ and Karen becoming owners in 2004. Its mission states that it offers multiple performance opportunities throughout the year because it believes that working toward an achievable goal can incentivize a student’s musical studies, and that musicians become better players by becoming better performers. Rockwall School of Music uses the Musical Ladder Achievement Program and states that there are no additional costs associated with recital participation.
Students drive from across Rockwall County and from Sunnyvale, Forney, Greenville, and Wylie to take lessons, and the school has been acknowledged by the City of Rockwall as an integral and valued part of the community in a quoted review, which also notes that its programs complement and elevate local school music programs. The Rockwall School of Music has won the Lakeside Living Best of Music Lessons Award for ten consecutive years and notes that it has earned more than 22 awards. Testimonials from parents and community members describe long-term enrollment, positive experiences with teachers and staff, and recognition of the school’s 30-year history.
Students are encouraged to bring all books, assignments, and materials needed for each lesson, and books and other materials may be purchased through the school, with charges added to the monthly invoice or paid by cash or check. The school is described as offering a clean and safe environment, professional instructors, and lessons for ages 5 to adult, including adult music lessons, with early classes available for homeschoolers and lessons offered seven days a week.
