Dedicated staff and volunteer coaches are on-site to train and instruct athletes, and they focus on boxing development for youth and young adults. The SFBC amateur boxing program is led by Coach Jeff Mays, who has been an assistant boxing coach with Team USA since 2017 and has served as lead coach for Women's World Championship training camps in Colorado Springs and Germany. He was Assistant Head Coach for the USA Women's World Championships team that competed in Ulan Ude, Russia, where the team finished in 4th place overall with one gold medalist, two bronze medalists, and seven out of ten boxers finishing in the top eight, and he is scheduled to be one of the USA Boxing coaches for the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo.

The program’s mission states that it teaches discipline and respect in a structured environment through training, teaching, and instructing youths and adults ages 8 to 34 to perform to their highest potential in all aspects of life. The San Fernando Boxing Club describes itself as a premier training ground that uses a holistic approach to boxing, strengthening mental, spiritual, and emotional health alongside physical conditioning, and emphasizes sportsmanship, education, and physical conditioning. It is open to ages 8 to 34, and athletes 35 and older are also welcome with a doctor’s note.

San Fernando Boxing Club has a long history, continuing a boxing tradition that began in a gym originally built in 1948 and dedicated in 1950, which was later acquired by the City of San Antonio in 1974 and renamed after local boxing legend Jesse James Leija in 2006. The SFBC operated at Jesse James Leija Gymnasium until early 2017, when it moved to its current home at Lincoln Community Center, and the program was temporarily closed in March 2020 due to the pandemic before reopening in June 2021. The club notes a history of visits and training by well-known boxers including Mike Tyson, Evander Holyfield, Oscar De La Hoya, and Pernell Whitaker.

The San Fernando Boxing Club has been represented at elite competitions such as the USA National Jr Olympics in Madison, Wisconsin; the Western Elite Qualifiers in Reno, Nevada; the Elite National Championships in Salt Lake City, Utah; and the Games of Texas in Corpus Christi. Boxers from the program include Ravven Brown, a current USA Boxing national champion at 141 lbs and noted as the only elite national champion in San Antonio, male or female, and Kenyon Walker, a current USA Boxing national champion who is ranked in the top 10 in the nation. To join, participants register via the USA Boxing Association website and bring USA Boxing membership verification to their first visit to register with San Fernando Boxing Club at no additional cost.
