NHL & NHLPA Learn to Play offers hockey sessions with on-ice instruction for new players. The program includes age-appropriate on-ice instruction in the Future Caps Learn to Play program and provides first-time participants with head-to-toe equipment to keep.
• Ages: 4–9 years old
• Schedule: Approximately 4–8 weeks of on-ice instruction with one lesson per week
• Price: The participation fee ranges from $279.00–$349.00 and varies by facility.
NHL & NHLPA Learn to Play is designed for first-time players between the ages of 4–9 years old who have not previously been registered to USA Hockey or a sanctioned youth hockey program, and registration with the National Governing Bodies is included for the program. On-ice instruction is led by certified coaches, with coaching certification provided by USA Hockey for Learn to Play participants. USA Hockey provides age-appropriate training modules and practice plans, coaching certification, background screening, and insurance for all Learn to Play participants, and USA Hockey is the National Governing Body for youth hockey in the United States. The program provides properly fitted head-to-toe equipment for first-time participants, and families are strongly encouraged to complete a Learn to Skate program at a local rink before signing up. Participants must register online, and phone or in-person registration at individual rinks is not accepted; if a local program is sold out, families may complete a waiting list form and may be contacted if an opening becomes available. The Learn to Play program aims to foster community by providing unique experiences and exclusive access to NHL clubs and alumni, and unique experiences with NHL clubs, league brands, and alumni vary from club to club. Families receive an overview of next step or transition programs by the host facility or organization before graduating from Learn to Play, and additional information is available for families at the Learn to Play Graduation Event.
