Skipwith Academy has been a leader in early childhood education in the Richmond area since 1996. Skipwith Academy at Hanover offers a developmentally appropriate curriculum and a literacy-enriched learning environment, along with math, art, music, and foreign language. The program includes Baby Steps: Infant Daycare, Toddler Explorers: Toddler Daycare, Preschool Explorers, the Preschool Readiness Enrichment Program (PREP), a Junior Kindergarten program, Youth Zone before and after school care, and Summer Camp. Youth Zone offers full-day programs on many school closure days, and provides breakfast, snacks, and transportation to and from area public schools. The program offers hot, nutritious meals and snacks, and meals and snacks are not included for children with food allergies. Unique features include age-appropriate outdoor playgrounds, a splash pad, a swimming pool, one large swimming pool with a mushroom waterfall attraction, a smaller pool for younger children, spacious playing fields, a volleyball pit, and four playgrounds designated for specific age groups. Classrooms are colorful and well lit, and the furniture and classroom storage solutions were chosen or custom-built with child safety in mind. The program uses inquiry-based learning centers, and the Junior Kindergarten program is led by specially trained teachers using inquiry-based learning, with an emphasis on community service, healthy eating, and social-emotional learning. Family involvement is encouraged through exclusive events and regular assessments of student progress. The program uses secure keypad entry systems and is guided by experienced teachers, with specially trained teachers supporting self-help and friendship skills.
