About
Mulford Riding School offers English horseback riding instruction that includes riding lessons, summer riding camp, SchoolsOff camps, Winter Camp, and Spring Break Camp. Classes cover grooming, tacking up, care of a horse, horse psychology, and balance exercises, with lessons that emphasize balance, seat, and legs to communicate with the horse without yanking the reins or kicking. All riders start with three private lessons or, if they join with a friend or sibling, three semi-private lessons, and then instructors determine whether the rider joins a group, needs an assistant in a group, or continues with more private lessons.
• Ages: 5–18 years old
• Schedule: Class options seven days a week, with all standard classes 1.5 hours long and lessons for children ages 5–6 lasting 1–1.25 hours; weekly lessons run September through May, with flexible lesson counts in June, July, and August, plus SchoolsOff camps from 9:00 a.m.–2:00 p.m.
• Price: 1 private lesson $150; 3 private lessons $375; 1 semi-private lesson $135 per rider; 3 semi-private lessons $360 per rider; 6 assisted group lessons $690; 6 group lessons $570; rental helmet for first 3 private lessons $25; lesson package auto-debited September–May at $392 per month for group lessons and $450 per month for assisted group lessons
At Mulford Riding School, safety is stated as paramount, and instruction includes all aspects of horsemanship such as grooming, tacking up, care of a horse, and horse psychology. Riding lessons focus on training legs to be in proper position, maintaining proper body position, correctly using leg signals, and not relying on stirrups for balance, with balance exercises included in each class and constant reinforcement of fundamentals. The program states that all riders must be in fit condition before scheduling lessons, with a height limit of 6'2" and weight limits of 170 lbs for people under 5'7" and 195 lbs for people between 5'8" and 6'2". Lessons are scheduled by appointment only and are taught seven days a week, with adult-only lessons offered on weekday mornings and mixed child-and-adult lessons offered on select afternoons and weekends.
Harry Mulford, who has a lifetime of riding experience, leads the program along with other instructors who provide immediate feedback and instruction. Mulford Riding School has been voted Best Summer Camp since 2016. The program offers a tour of the barns during the first scheduled lesson, and students are asked to wear long pants and paddock boots, with helmet rentals available for the first three private lessons before purchasing a fitted helmet from a tack store. Registration is open for Summer Camp, including Summer Camp 2026, and for new Fairfax school days off camps, Winter Camp, and Spring Break Camp, and families can sign up for email updates to receive announcements and updates.
