Mulford Riding School offers horseback riding instruction that includes riding lessons, Summer Riding Camp, SchoolsOff camps, Winter Camp, and Spring Break Camp. Classes cover grooming, tacking up, care of a horse, horse psychology, balance exercises while on a horse, and facility tours of the barns. Lessons emphasize balance, seat, and legs to communicate with the horse, with students practicing a variety of balance exercises during each class.
• Ages: 5–18 years old
• Schedule: Classes are offered seven days a week, with all standard classes an hour and a half long and lessons for children 5–6 years old running an hour to an hour and 15 minutes; group lessons run in 6 consecutive week series, and the Lessons Package runs weekly September through May with flexible lesson counts in June, July, and August.
• Price: 1 private lesson $150; 3 private lessons $375; 1 semi private lesson $135 (each rider); 3 semi private lessons $360 (each rider); 6 assisted group lessons $715; 6 group lessons $630; rental helmet for first 3 private lessons $25; Lessons Package auto-debited September–May at $415 per month for group lessons and $470 per month for assisted group lessons.
Everyone starts with three private classes, or three semi-private classes if they join with a friend, and after those first three lessons staff determine whether the rider joins a group, joins a group with an assistant, or continues with more private lessons. Many riders take several series of private and/or assisted group lessons before riding independently in a group. Mulford Riding School states that safety is paramount and that lessons are comprehensive classes with constant reinforcement of fundamentals, including training legs to be in proper position, maintaining proper body position, correctly using leg signals, and not relying on stirrups for balance. Lessons are scheduled by appointment only, all riders must be in fit condition before scheduling, and there are specified weight limits based on height and a height limit of 6'2". Riders are asked to wear long pants and paddock boots, and they can rent a helmet for the first three lessons before purchasing their own helmet fitted in person.
Harry Mulford has a lifetime of riding experience and, along with the instructors, provides immediate feedback and instruction. Mulford Riding School has been voted Best Summer Camp since 2016.
