About

Mason STEM Summer Camps include activities in biology, chemistry, physics, mathematics, geography, geology, engineering, forensic science, game design and creation, and digital art. Campers work with topics such as Python, Java, music and sound for games, computer hardware, cyber security, writing code, and machine design. The program also includes mechanical, civil, electrical, computer, and bioengineering activities.

Mason STEM Summer Camps are connected to George Mason University, which is a public, comprehensive research university established by the Commonwealth of Virginia in the National Capital Region. The university states that it is an innovative and inclusive academic community committed to creating a more just, free, and prosperous world. The program is part of a university that is classified as an R1 research university and is recognized as a top 50 public university by the Wall Street Journal and Forbes, and No. 1 in Virginia for Best Bang for the Buck by Washington Monthly. George Mason University is also ranked No. 1 among Virginia and Washington, D.C., metropolitan area public universities for upward mobility and for salary outcomes, and is ranked 21st among public universities and 2nd in Virginia for free speech by the Foundation for Individual Rights and Expression. The university is Virginia’s largest public research university, established Virginia’s first School of Computing and first College of Public Health, and is designated as a Carnegie Opportunity College and University in the Higher Access, Higher Earnings tier. Mason STEM Summer Camps sit within a broader community role that includes K–12 lab schools focused on data science and STEM, the ACCESS Academy in Loudoun County, the ADVANCE dual-admission partnership with Northern Virginia Community College and other community colleges, and statewide Small Business Development Centers managed by Mason Enterprise. The university also leads initiatives such as a Google-funded cybersecurity clinic with Howard University and a National Science Foundation–funded project to help local communities implement climate-resilient strategies. The leadership team connected to this environment includes Amarda Shehu, the inaugural Chief Artificial Intelligence Officer. The wider university has opened specialized facilities such as the Forensic Science Research and Training Laboratory (body farm), Fuse at Mason Square as an innovation hub, and the Nanofabrication Facility, Northern Virginia’s only cleanroom facility, and its College of Engineering and Computing engineers developed “Coffeebots,” magnetic particles made from spent coffee grounds and iron oxide to remove oil, microplastics, and toxic dyes from seawater. The Mason STEM Summer Camps offerings also include the FOCUS Summer Camp for females of color underrepresented in STEM, Mason Game & Technology Academy Summer Camps offered by the Virginia Serious Game Institute and Mason’s Computer Game Design Program, and engineering camps involving the Volgenau School of Engineering that provide instruction on multiple engineering disciplines and cyber security.
