Fifty/50 Martial Arts Academy was founded in 2008. Youth programs are tailored to reinforce the life skills of confidence, discipline, dedication, hard work, teamwork, and respect. Youth Judo classes are designed for elementary and middle school students in 1st–8th grade and are open to beginners and experienced practitioners. The Fifty/50 method of instruction is described as a scientific approach toward mastery of the art and an accelerated learning environment.
The athletic performance center is staffed by a Performance Coach who is a Certified Athletic Trainer with a background in Exercise Science and Strength & Conditioning, and the Sports Performance Center is staffed by Performance Coach Josh Peacock. The youth Judo program is led by David Terao, a #1 Ranked USA Judo National Team Member at 60kgs and a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Black Belt. The leadership team includes Ryan Hall, owner and operator of Fifty/50 Martial Arts Academy, world-renowned competitor, instructor, and UFC Fighter; Thanh Le, former ONE Championship World Champion, Ultimate Fighter 22 Veteran, and 5th Degree TKD Black Belt who designed the striking program; David Terao, leader of the youth Judo program; Seph Smith, owner and operator of Upstream BJJ and Ryan Hall’s first Black Belt; and Zack Ghalayini, a Ryan Hall Brown Belt and avid competitor leading Fourth Dimension Jiu-Jitsu in Manassas, VA.
The mat room has approximately 4,000 square feet of premium grade Zebra mats, allowing up to two classes to be taught at once, and mats and the academy are cleaned and vacuumed twice daily and deep cleaned weekly by a professional team. The Sports Performance Center opened in August 2022 with almost 400 square feet of top-of-the-line training equipment. Fifty/50 is described as the premier Mixed Martial Arts facility in the state of Virginia and is the only academy in the DMV area with four full-time International Level Black Belt Instructors.
The Fifty/50 competition team has earned 38 World Championship medals, 42 Pan American medals, and 24 Fifty/50 athletes have medaled at the national or international level in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu competitions. The Fifty/50 Team has three locations in Northern Virginia and one in Richmond, and Upstream BJJ in Richmond, VA is the first Fifty/50 affiliate, owned and operated by Seph Smith, offering Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu classes for kids and adults of all levels. The mission of Fifty/50 Martial Arts Academy is to innovate by training with the best and competing on the world level, constantly pushing to learn and grow physically, mentally, and technically while staying on the cutting edge of the sport.
A parent and student testimonial from Chris, a White Belt, describes the atmosphere as professional yet kid and family friendly, with top notch, patient, and available instructors, and notes that Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is a great martial art for everyone to learn, great exercise, and builds strong bonds.
