About
The VABA Summer Coaching Internship Program includes attending staff meetings, taking part in pre-camp preparations, and joining on-court teaching sessions as part of the summer camp staff. VABA Coaching Interns are part of the VABA summer staff and work alongside VABA's paid, professional staff and seasoned, professional coaches. The program follows VABA's motto that "coaching is teaching" and connects interns with VABA's thorough, diversified skill development program for individual and team development.
• Ages: 11–18 years old
The VABA Summer Coaching Internship Program is run by the Virginia Basketball Academy, a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization. It is designed for rising 6th–12th graders who are interested in gaining leadership experience as part of VABA's Summer Camp Staff and who are aspiring coaches and teachers eager to work with youth and strengthen their teaching and leadership abilities. Through roles as coaches, mentors, counselors, and leaders, participants contribute to the development of future generations. Coaching interns are expected to develop leadership skills, deepen their knowledge of the game, earn community service hours, build their resume, and establish reputable contacts within the local basketball coaching and teaching community. VABA Coaches are expected to be role models on and off the court in the community. For a Summer Coaching Intern to be effective, the program states that he or she must be eager, on time, hard-working, diligent, willing to go the extra mile, have a positive attitude, be eager to learn and listen, and be willing to do whatever task is necessary for the "VABA Team." If a Summer Coaching Intern makes a commitment, the program states that he or she is expected to fulfill this commitment. The organization describes this as a fulfilling experience that is well-spent making a difference in the community. VABA's mission statement is "Building Character and Shaping Lives through the Game of Basketball."
