School of Rock Haymarket offers performance-based music education that includes weekly private music lessons, weekly group rehearsals, and weekly group music lessons. Students take part in activities such as songwriting, songwriting exercises, lyrical workshops, live performances, and recording original songs. Programs include Rock 101 for beginners, a Performance Program, a Rookies program, a Songwriting program, a House Band program, and the AllStars Tour.
• Ages: 4–18 years old
• Schedule: Class options Monday–Friday, generally between mid-afternoon and evening hours
The Rock 101 program is for beginners ages 8–13 and includes a weekly group rehearsal and a weekly private music lesson. The Performance Program is for ages 8–18 and also includes a weekly group rehearsal and a weekly private music lesson. The Rookies program is for ages 6–7 and includes one weekly group music lesson and the use of simplified rock instruments. The Songwriting program is for age 12 and over and includes one weekly private lesson and one weekly group lesson, along with songwriting exercises, lyrical workshops, and recording original songs. The House Band program is for students age 17 and under to join a gigging band and perform additional live shows. The AllStars Tour selects less than 1% of School of Rock students each year from around the world for a nationwide summer tour across the United States, and all Performance Program students are eligible to audition for the AllStars program.
The mission of School of Rock Haymarket is stated as “We build a community that fosters personal growth.” An independent study reported that after joining School of Rock programs, 96.2% of parents saw a boost in their child’s self-confidence and 95.9% reported improved teamwork skills, based on self-reported survey data. House Band members perform live shows at Virginia rock venues throughout the year and at stages throughout Haymarket and the rest of Virginia. Performance Program students play at local Haymarket music venues in front of a live audience, and Songwriting program students perform their original compositions in bands at a local music venue.
