Reston Hoops & Reston Volleyball is a non-profit organization run by a board of local parents and committed volunteers and offers and supports various youth sports programs, including basketball and volleyball. The organization’s mission is to cultivate character, camaraderie, and athletic growth in a positive coaching environment focusing on skill development, teamwork, and the joy of participating in sports. Proceeds are aimed at giving back to local schools, youth programs, and other non-profit organizations, and the organization seeks to foster a sense of community by connecting with other local leagues and clubs.
Volleyball is offered in the spring and fall for 4th–8th graders, with recreational coed volleyball for grades 4–6 and both recreational and select volleyball for boys and girls in grades 7–8. House Volleyball emphasizes equal playing time, friend requests, school affiliation, and community involvement, and tryouts are required to play in the Select volleyball division, which is for 7th–8th grade athletes who have a foundational understanding of volleyball or another team sport and want a more challenging environment. Reston Volleyball offers preseason, postseason, and off-season pop-up clinics and open gyms throughout the year when gym space is available, and Reston Volleyball League seasons are in spring and fall. Reston Volleyball provides team jerseys once teams are formed, and players provide their own shorts, socks, kneepads (optional), and gym shoes.
Basketball is offered in the winter and summer for the House League and in the fall and winter for Select (Travel), with winter and summer House basketball for 1st–12th grade and Select (Travel) basketball for 5th–8th grade. TopCourts is a program for kids with physical or mental challenges who want to learn basketball. Reston Hoops is mostly run by unpaid volunteers, except for referees, admin, and a game day manager, and athletes who play in the league mostly reside in Fairfax County, though all are welcome. The organization currently offers basketball and volleyball and recommends lacrosse with HRYL and football with RYA.
Head coaches receive one free athlete registration and can choose a practice day and time from what is available, and student coaches receive community service hours. Referees must be in high school or post–high school, be at least 15 years old, and have prior volleyball experience at the start of any given season to be eligible to referee, and about two hours of preseason (pre-match) training are required. Leadership roles include Brian Legler (President, Founding Board Member), Pete Barr (Girls Basketball Travel Director, Founding Board Member), Todd Shea (Girls Basketball House Director, Founding Board Member), Brad Branham (Boys Basketball House Director, Board Member), Karim Daoud (Boys Basketball Travel Director, Board Member), Laura Shea (Treasurer, Board Member), Terry Redican (Member at Large, Founding Board Member), Jeremy Lee (Member at Large, Board Member), Khuong Mulvaney (Volleyball Co-Director, Board Member), Annmarie Swope (Volleyball Deputy Director), Elaine Turner (Admin), David Hawa (Member at Large, Board Member), Stephanie Kaple (Volleyball Co-Director), and Marc Simoncelli (Summer Basketball Director). Reston Sports by Reston Hoops has been in operation from 2012 to 2026.
Parent feedback includes comments that coaching staff provide guidance and support, that board members are approachable and easy to work with, that families have had great coaches including high school seniors and a father–son coaching pair, and that having games and practices close to the neighborhood is convenient compared with other leagues that required more travel.
