Cadence Theatre Company Youth Arts & Educational Programs offers activities in theatre and film, including a Filmmaking Fundamentals: Vertical Videos class where participants work on concepting, directing, producing, formatting, and editing. Participants collaborate to create their own short films and can take part in pre-professional acting training for the stage and screen. Educational offerings include STAGE WRITE, TRAIN, Cadence Camps, year-round Rehearsal & Performance Programs, and Adult Acting Classes that focus on theatre, film, and related creative work.
The program is part of Cadence, a dynamic nonprofit organization based in Richmond, Virginia, that blends theatre, film, and education to engage multigenerational audiences in unique and meaningful ways. Cadence was founded in November 2009 by Anna Senechal Johnson and is now celebrating its 16th year. The Pipeline New Works Program was founded with Pulitzer Prize and Tony Award-winning playwright David Lindsay-Abaire and novelist, playwright, and screenwriter Clay McLeod Chapman, and the annual Pipeline New Works retreat involves collaboration with nationally known playwriting mentors Jeni Mahoney and Bob Bartlett. Between 2011 and 2023, Cadence presented an annual season of plays, musicals, and new works in partnership with Virginia Repertory Theatre and is an Associate Member of the National New Play Network, participating in its Rolling World Premiere Program. Cadence has earned several awards, including many Richmond Theatre Critics Circle Awards, the Dominion Energy ArtStars Award, and program support from the NEA.
The mission of Cadence is to transform and educate the community by developing talent and presenting contemporary theater and film works that uplift the spirit, challenge the mind, and honor both individuality and shared humanity. Cadence is known for acclaimed theatrical productions, award-winning films, and new work initiatives such as the Pipeline New Works Program. Its educational programs, including STAGE WRITE, TRAIN, Cadence Camps, year-round Rehearsal & Performance Programs, and Adult Acting Classes, foster creativity, leadership, and empathy, engaging multigenerational audiences and shaping the next generation of artists and changemakers. Sitelines BLM is a Cadence program that aims to center the voices of artists from the Global Majority and create new “seeing places” that celebrate cultural heritage and bring communities together. TRAIN is described as Virginia’s premier pre-professional actor training program designed to provide the serious acting student with the practical skills needed to succeed in the business. Cadence is tax-exempt under section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code.
