Boys & Girls Clubs of Southeast Virginia has been serving youth across its region for more than 100 years. Its stated mission is “To enable all young people, especially those who need us most, to reach their full potential as productive, caring, responsible citizens.” The organization describes itself as a comprehensive youth service organization. The leadership team includes Kevin Will, President & CEO, and Volunteer & Donor Engagement Coordinator, Steve Gray. Membership is open to all young people ages 6 through 18, and the organization identifies three priority outcomes: Academic Success, Good Character & Citizenship, and Healthy Lifestyles. Healthy Habits is identified as the Mind component of Triple Play: A Game Plan for the Mind, Body and Soul. The organization states that court-ordered volunteering is not permitted and that a newsletter is sent out once per month.
Kevin Will, President & CEO, states that “Every day is an opportunity to invest in the potential of our local youth” and describes the Club as “a second home where Great Futures are shaped, leaders are born, and hope becomes reality.” He also states that he believes every child, regardless of race, religion, ethnic heritage, physical/mental abilities, sexual orientation, gender identity and expression, should have equal access to a safe place to grow, quality mentors, opportunities to explore, and tools to achieve their dreams. Alumni member Caleb Jones describes starting at the Club at eight years old, experiencing academic help beginning in elementary school, and being introduced to football, which became his favorite sport. He reports that his social life improved, he made many friends, and he was surrounded by role models at the Club. He credits the Club with supporting his academic success in high school, where he earned All-Region, All-Tidewater, and All-State honors three times in football, was selected as Conference Defensive Player of the Year, and finished his senior season with 88 tackles, 47 tackles for loss, and 13 sacks while helping lead Oscar Smith to back-to-back Class 6A State Championships. He states that he graduated with a 3.9 GPA, received a scholarship to play Defensive Line at North Carolina A & T where he majored in Applied Psychology, and is continuing his football career at Boston College, and he thanks the Club and staff for pushing him to be the best version of himself.
