About

Camp Under the Stars is an overnight summer camp where campers take part in activities such as yoga, mindfulness, book time, and hiking. The camp includes downtime with yoga, mindfulness, and book time in addition to time to hike from one activity to the next.

• Ages: 5–17 years old

Under the Stars Inc., which operates Camp Under the Stars, was started in 2017 by a group of summer camp professionals, including its Executive Directors. The organization’s mission is to provide a supportive, inclusive camp community that values each child's uniqueness, celebrates differences, and respects nature and the planet. Under the Stars Inc. is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, and donations support the camp program, including financial assistance for camper fees.

Camp Under the Stars is described as a small “micro-camp” where all camp staff know all campers by name and know campers and their families well enough to provide individualized support when needed. The camp schedule includes nutritious meals and snacks with food alternatives always available, fun days, calm evenings, and enough time for a full night of sleep. Flexibility is built into camp operations, and the camp reports that adapting to new COVID regulations and precautions is done with attention to detail. The camp program and each camp activity are developed intentionally, with additional camp staff available to offer support when needed.

The camp describes its program as a great fit for younger campers and for apprehensive parents. Supports for younger campers include helping organize clothes and laundry, ensuring clean clothes daily, helping brush or braid hair, toothbrush parties, sunscreen breaks, water breaks, individual support for bedwetting and accidents, and closely monitoring each camper's wellbeing throughout the day. Camp staff are available to speak to parents on the phone while their child is at camp and provide updates, and the camp takes copious photos and videos to share with parents throughout the week.

Camp Under the Stars staff are adults from the DC metro area and from other parts of the world. Camp staff go through a rigorous application process, extensive training, and background checks, and many have years of experience working with children in a camp setting. Some staff members are teachers, including special education, ESOL, and gifted education teachers, and some are former camp directors. All camp staff are certified in first aid and CPR at minimum, and ongoing staff training is provided throughout the year. The health cabin is staffed by a Nurse and/or Nurse Practitioner, and most of the camp nurses have years of experience working in health cabins at overnight camps.
