Under the Stars Inc., the organization behind Camp Under the Stars, is a nonprofit organization started in 2017 by a group of summer camp professionals, including the Executive Directors. Camp Under the Stars is described as a small “micro-camp,” where all camp staff know all campers by name and know campers and their families well enough to provide individualized support when needed. The camp program and each camp activity are developed intentionally, with flexibility built into everything the camp does, including adapting to new COVID regulations and precautions with attention to detail.

The camp schedule is designed to include nutritious meals and snacks with food alternatives always available, plenty of time to hike from one activity to the next, downtime including yoga, mindfulness, and book time, additional camp staff available to offer support when needed, and fun days, calm evenings, and enough time for a full night of sleep. The program includes specific supports for younger campers, such as helping campers organize their clothes and laundry, ensuring campers are putting on clean clothes daily, helping campers brush or braid their hair, toothbrush parties, sunscreen breaks, frequent water breaks, individual support for bedwetting and accidents, and closely monitoring each camper’s wellbeing throughout the day. Staff are also available to speak to parents on the phone, provide honest updates, and share many photos and videos throughout the week.

Camp Under the Stars staff are adults from the DC metro area and from other parts of the world. Camp staff go through a rigorous application process, extensive training, and background checks, and many have years of experience working with children in a camp setting. Some staff members are teachers, including special education, ESOL, and gifted education teachers, and some are former camp directors. Camp staff receive ongoing staff training throughout the year, and all camp staff are certified in first aid and CPR at minimum. The health cabin is staffed by a Nurse and/or Nurse Practitioner, and most of the camp nurses have years of experience working in health cabins at overnight camps.

Under the Stars Inc. states that its mission is to provide a supportive, inclusive camp community that values each child's uniqueness, celebrates differences, and respects nature and the planet. Under the Stars Inc. is a nonprofit organization in Northern Virginia with local and remote staff and volunteer opportunities, and donations support the camp program, including financial assistance for camper fees. Under the Stars Inc.
