Vienna Youth Rugby offers rugby, including TAG Rugby, youth tackle rugby, middle school tackle rugby, and high school tackle rugby. The program includes coed TAG Rugby for U8, U10, and U12, coed youth tackle rugby for U12, coed middle school tackle rugby for U14, and high school tackle rugby for U16 and 18U. Rugby activities follow the tagline: “In Rugby.... Everybody plays offense Everybody plays defense Every player handles the ball Anybody can score!”
• Ages: 7–18 years old
• Schedule: High school boys (U18 and U16) practice on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 7pm, with spring tackle practices beginning in January, spring TAG practices beginning in March, and summer practices beginning in May, usually on Tuesdays and Thursdays.
The coaching staff’s stated philosophy is to build up players both on and off the field, and the staff combines decades of experience from New Zealand, Europe, and the U.S. Vienna Youth, Inc. offers sports programs, including rugby, to children from 5–18 years of age in the Vienna, Virginia and surrounding Northern Virginia area and funds an annual college scholarship program for past participants who will attend college in search of a degree. Vienna Youth Rugby is described as Northern Virginia's premiere rugby program for new and experienced players and offers rugby for boys and girls from ages U8 to 18U. Vienna High School Boys are nationally ranked, are the 2023 Boys High School Nationals Rugby Tournament Tier 2 Champions, and are the Spring and Summer 2023 Virginia State Champions, and the teams have a history of winning, including high school national championships as well as Virginia state championships.
Beginning in 2026, Vienna Youth Rugby will use one registration with one fee for spring and summer 7s, and all players will also be required to register with USA Rugby. Winter practice fields are usually James Madison High School or Marshall High School, spring and summer practice fields are usually Thoreau Middle School, home games are usually at James Madison High School, Oakton High School, Nottoway Park, or Marshall High School, and away game locations vary. High school girls have the option of practicing with a number of all-girls teams, and VYI is eager to reestablish a program for high school girls and will open and support a girls program if enough girls, ideally 15 or more, express interest.
