American Academy of Fine Arts (aafa) was founded in 2013 in Virginia to encourage appreciation and teaching of the classical style and exploration of new technologies and imaginations. The mission states that young artists learn art fundamentals, enrich their sense of art, identify with one another, expand their notion of what people are, and show that individual engagement in the world has actual consequences.
AAFA Art Camp offers half-day and full-day camps for K–12 students, with separate art camps for children in K–6 and teens in grades 7–12. Each week focuses on different topics, with 2026 summer themes including Outdoor Nature, Cartoon & Manga, Mixed Masters – Learn from the Masters, Art & Science Lab, Pet Paradise, Jungle Art Journey, World Wonders, Creative Storybook Art, Underwater & Ocean Art Adventure, and Mixed Media Art Lab. Students are divided into different groups based on their levels, using two balanced age-based groups and small-group instruction, and a stable daily schedule is used. Mixed-media instruction uses materials such as acrylic paint, watercolor, clay or modeling materials, collage, 3D construction, and printmaking when possible, and all materials are included, with a microwave provided for snacks and lunches. By the end of each week, children produce multiple finished artworks, and on the last day there is a Parents Showcase/Exhibition where children help display their work for families.
