About
Grace Gymnastics Center at the Lakewood YMCA offers recreational gymnastics classes, preschool gymnastics classes, a Pre-Team program, and competitive gymnastics. The program includes Xcel Bronze gymnastics and Xcel Silver gymnastics, and recreational classes lead into the Pre-Team program where gymnasts learn skills necessary for competitive gymnastics. Try-outs are held throughout the year for competitive teams, and YMCA membership is required to participate in the program.
• Price: Recreational and preschool classes are included with the price of YMCA membership.
Head coach Kevin Milliren competed for Stadium High School from 1978 to 1981, worked at Puget Sound School of Gymnastics from 1980 to 2003 in multiple coaching and program roles, and has worked at Lakewood Family YMCA/Grace Gymnastics Center from 2003 to the present. He was the 1991 Washington State Coach of the Year, serves on the YMCA National Gymnastics Advisory Committee, and is the Interim South Washington Sectional Representative for USAG WA. Coach Katie coaches Xcel Bronze and Silver gymnasts, has been coaching at Grace Gymnastics for about 5 years, and was a gymnast at Grace for 10 years, reaching level 9. Coach Linda has been coaching for over 20 years and has coached from preschool up to Level 6. Other coaches mentioned on the staff include Coach Carleigh, Coach Kenzie, Coach Grace, Coach MacKenzie, Coach Yana, and Coach Ava.
The stated goal of Grace Gymnastics Center is to teach gymnastics in a comfortable atmosphere that is enjoyable and fun while stressing the importance of progression and striving for excellence. The program states that its competitive program also teaches mental discipline, cooperation and being a good teammate, dedication and commitment, goal setting and perseverance, viewing winning as a possible but not sole or most important goal, and how to win and lose with grace and humility. The program states that these aspects will extend beyond team participation and become attributes gymnasts use throughout their lives, and that a knowledgeable and caring staff works to the level of the individual and does not pressure athletes into skills they are not physically or mentally ready to perform.
The team is a member of USA Gymnastics and competes in both the Developmental program and Xcel. Competitions include State Championships, Regional Championships, and the annual Y Nationals in late June, where YMCA gymnastics teams from around the country compete for national titles. The program is hiring compulsory, optional, and pre-team level coaches with flexible hours and pay up to $19.50 per hour.
