About

HPL Hockey offers hockey games, evaluation skates, and a learn to play hockey program, along with the Shooting Stars Kids Club, the Up and Comers program, and the Future Stars program. The program also includes a rivalry series, travel tournaments, and other league and showcase play for its teams.

• Ages: 4–13 years old
• Schedule: There are no early morning practices; the Up and Comers program for 6 year olds offers each player ice 3 days a week.

Over the past seven years, HPL Hockey has transitioned from being an industry leader in spring hockey programs to a year-round hockey development company. It is described as a high performance level development hockey program for youth and a year-round hockey development company that is focused on high-performance players. Every director of HPL Hockey has several years of experience operating highly successful hockey programs, and the program brings together a collection of coaches, developers, and leaders in the hockey industry.

Each age group in HPL Hockey has its own unique name, and each program is described as catering to players specifically at that age and level. Smaller team sizes are used so that each player receives more individual attention during all ice sessions. The program schedule is described as consistent, and this schedule allows HPL Hockey players to participate in multiple sports outside of hockey. All HPL ice times are offered in a facility central to the lower mainland, and both Planet Ice facilities are outfitted with cameras on every rink, which allows family to watch games if they are not able to attend in person.

HPL Hockey includes several specific program streams. The Shooting Stars Kids Club has four programs running and 120 kids starting their hockey journey, and it started in Coquitlam and expanded to Coquitlam, North Vancouver, and Langley. The Up and Comers program for 6 year olds has grown to four teams and offers each player ice three days a week. The Future Stars program for 7 year olds has every team playing in two tournaments on top of their league schedule.

The program has expanded into multiple regions. It is described as emerging in the Okanagan with parents looking to be a part of HPL Hockey. The team in the Okanagan practices in the Okanagan and travels to Vancouver for seven showcase weekends over the fall and winter, competing in 28 games. Two new teams have emerged on Vancouver Island, and another new program called the Wolves has started, with the Island Wolves having three teams in their second year. The Okanagan Knights have four teams competing in the winter hockey season, and a 2011 team has been added to their program.

HPL Hockey runs a rivalry series for teams in the mainland, with teams playing each other twice in a week once a month. Okanagan and Island programs have each Vancouver-based program travel to them for weekend series. Six showcase weekends are held in the lower mainland with every team participating. Teams also attend travel tournaments, including two 2012 teams to Banff, two 2010 teams to Banff, three 2011 teams to Edmonton, and two 2009 teams to Banff.

The stated goal of HPL Hockey is to provide children with the best hockey experience possible every day in a challenging and safe environment. The program is focused on each child’s athletic growth and states that it wants to develop participants into great people, not just great hockey players.
