About

Youth/STEM Programs take place at the National Railroad Museum and are connected to its exhibits and collections. The museum features indoor and outdoor exhibits, operating and display tracks, and seasonal train rides, with daily train rides scheduled to return in May. The museum is home to more than 70 one-of-a-kind train cars, known as rolling stock, and hosts rotating exhibits supported by a growing collection of over 150,000 railroad artifacts, images, and manuscripts.

• Schedule: January–March, closed on Mondays; open Tuesdays 9:00 a.m.–8:00 p.m., Wednesdays–Saturdays 9:00 a.m.–4:00 p.m., and Sundays 11:00 a.m.–4:00 p.m.

With roots dating back to 1956, the National Railroad Museum is one of the largest, oldest, and most well-respected rail museums in the United States and is a congressionally-designated museum. Less than half of the museum’s 78,000 square feet of exhibit space (36,500 square feet) is climate-controlled. The museum also offers special events and rental opportunities.

When families contribute to the Full Steam Ahead! campaign, they support an educational resource for the community and contribute to the economic health of the area. Visitors have described the museum as well organized and laid out, with access to the interiors of many locomotives and railcars and a variety of exhibits, including trains that can be entered and explored. One parent of a 6-year-old train enthusiast noted that the child was excited to see a Big Boy locomotive and that they were able to walk through many old train cars.
