The Miracle League of Dane County is a baseball program that uses a custom-designed diamond built to meet the unique needs of children with cognitive and physical disabilities. The field has rubberized turf so children who use wheelchairs, walkers, or have difficulty walking can take part in the game. Each player is paired with a volunteer buddy who helps them hit, throw, field, and score a run, while families have the option to watch from the stands.
The Miracle League of Dane County’s mission is to sustain an inclusive program that gives children with cognitive and physical disabilities the chance to experience the joy of baseball on a custom-designed diamond built to meet their unique needs. The program states that it is dedicated to removing barriers to create a welcoming, accessible environment where every child can enjoy baseball and build lasting memories.
Bill Schultz is the Founder and Executive Director of The Miracle League of Dane County. In 2018, Bill and his wife saw an “Inspiring America” segment that inspired the project. Construction of the field began in the fall of 2020, and the inaugural season opened in June 2021 with 96 children on the field. By the 2025 season, over 320 players were on the field, with 80% of players returning for multiple seasons and 30% of players using mobility aids. Players come from 20 communities, with some traveling over 50 miles, and over $500,000 was raised locally to build the field. A $1.5 million accessible playground facility at Phoebe Bakken Park is planned, with construction scheduled to start in spring 2026 and completion expected in summer 2026, to offer play opportunities for children of all capacities. Team Coach and Executive Director Bill Schultz describes stepping onto the field each summer and fall as the highlight of his year, with every moment unforgettable.
