Since its founding in 1887 by Annabell Cook Whitcomb, who started the work in two basement rooms at Plymouth Church for local boys, the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Milwaukee has grown into Milwaukee’s largest youth-serving agency and the largest Boys & Girls Clubs organization in the nation. The organization reports a dedicated team of nearly 500 full- and part-time employees. Its mission statement says that thousands of Milwaukee youth find safety, support, and inspiration daily through programs that include academic support, recreational activities, meals, mentorship, athletics, and arts access, with a focus on helping them succeed academically, build character, and lead healthy lives. The organization notes that it is proud to be the largest Boys & Girls Club in the country. A Club alum shared, “The Boys & Girls Clubs helped me be a better person, make a difference in the world, be a good mom with silly songs to sing, great stories to share, and friendships to last a lifetime.”
