Pink Umbrella Theater Company was founded in September 2018 and is the first professional theater company in Milwaukee with a focus on hiring Disabled Actors and Artists. The mission of Pink Umbrella Theater Company is to provide a platform to amplify the voices of Disabled Artists ages four through adult, with a stated mission to create 20 plays and musicals for the Disability Theater Canon. Teaching artists are trained in theater and special education and use a pedagogy based on presuming competence, allowing for processing time, maintaining flexibility, and encouraging advocacy, with class sizes of no more than 10 and at least two teaching artists in the room, pending the age group. Performances and workshops are limited to small audience sizes, with each performance limited to 25 seats, some workshops limited to 25 participants, and the Vocal Audition Master Class limited to 10 participants, and the program uses a tiered ticket pricing model that includes a Barrier Free option and focuses on creating accessible theater for all.

Pink Umbrella Theater received an award from ARTS MIDWEST, through the National Endowment for the Arts and their Shakespeare in America Apprentice program for the 2025–2026 season. One actor, Ali Meisinger, shared, “She’s excited to be back on stage and lifting up other voices to the community! She hopes you enjoy the show!” Another actor, Jack Allen, shared, “Jack says this is a great opportunity to represent people with intellectual disabilities in theater in a way they haven’t been included before.”
