Established in 1994, the Aldo Leopold Nature Center is an independent, non-profit organization. Programs rooted in nature are offered throughout the year, including outdoor, hands-on childcare programs. Family Trailside Backpacks, interactive nature activities, trail maps, and trail guides are available inside during regular hours, and Trailside Backpacks are free to check out. Nature trails through restored native prairie, woodland, and wetland habitats are free and open to the public 365 days a year from dawn until dusk.

The organization states that it is rooted in nature and is leading the way to ensure all visitors have opportunities to connect with the natural world by offering programs that capture their interest, engage their senses, and teach them to appreciate the interconnectedness of all living things. It acknowledges the First Nations that came before, specifically the Ho-Chunk Nation, on whose ancestral land the nature center sits. It also states a commitment to supporting every person’s right to connect with the natural world and notes ongoing efforts toward inclusion, diversity, equity, and access, in partnership with individuals, families, and community partners.

The leadership team includes: Betsy Parker, President & Executive Director; Ray Cruz, Business Manager; Lizzie Condon, Director of Development & Communications; Virginia Wiggen, Vice President & Nature Center Director; Shaina Stewart, Education Manager; Lauren Mordini, Camps Manager; Suzy Grindrod, Early Childhood Education Coordinator; Courtney Woods, Aldo Leopold Nature Preschool Director; Chris Gillette, Facilities Coordinator; Rebecca Wright, Private Events Manager; Brian Schneider, Director of Land Management & Conservation; and Sarah Voss, Director of Community Engagement.
