About

Read Better Be Better Reading Programs began as an afterschool reading comprehension and leadership program that paired 3rd grade readers with middle school leaders. The program now offers a comprehensive reading program that involves kindergarten through 3rd grade readers, 4th through 8th grade student leaders, and high school students in specific leadership pathways. High school students can participate by assisting Program Coaches in the afterschool reading program or by taking part in a civic leadership curriculum.

• Ages: 5–18 years old
• Schedule: Monday–Friday, 8:00 AM – 4:00 PM

Read Better Be Better is a nonprofit organization based in Phoenix, Arizona, founded in 2014 as a response to the state’s literacy crisis. Its mission is love of literacy and leadership. Over time, the organization has expanded to serve students from kindergarten through 12th grade. Readers in kindergarten through 3rd grade work on foundational literacy skills, while students in 4th through 8th grade build on their leadership skills by helping younger readers engage with literacy. The Pathways to Education Professions Program provides high school students with paid internship opportunities to work alongside Read Better Be Better staff during afterschool literacy sessions. The Pathways to Civic Leadership Program guides high school students through a curriculum focused on leadership development, community engagement, civic engagement, and social responsibility.
