About
Sun Devil Baseball Camps offers several baseball camp options, including Youth Camp, Showcase Camp, Pitching Camp, Hitting Camp, and a Spring Skills Clinic. The camps focus on baseball activities such as pitching, hitting, and organized games between campers after specific drills have been practiced. Contests are built into drills to capture the learner’s attention, resulting in attentive practice.
• Ages: 8–18 years old
• Schedule: Spring Skills Clinic runs from January to March, with sessions from January 26 to March 31 at 5:00 pm
• Price: $75
According to the program’s mission statement, Sun Devil Baseball Camps offers an opportunity for players to receive instruction on the fundamental skills of baseball and makes campers aware of characteristics that define successful baseball players. All camps are open to any and all entrants, limited only by gender, number, age, and grade level, and camps range in age so that they have a program to fit various needs. The camps are not affiliated with or sponsored by Arizona State University, and “Sun Devils” and the Pitchfork are registered trademarks used with permission of the Arizona Board of Regents.
The program is led by head coach Willie Bloomquist. Bloomquist was named head coach for the Arizona State University baseball program on June 11, 2021, and is a 14-year Major League Baseball veteran with over 20 years of experience in professional baseball. He played for the Seattle Mariners, Kansas City Royals, Cincinnati Reds, and Arizona Diamondbacks, and became the first Arizona State Sun Devil to play for the Diamondbacks, contributing to their 2011 National League West Championship team. He was an All-American in 1998 and 1999, earned 1999 Pac-10 Player of the Year honors, graduated from ASU in 2001 with a management degree, and has been inducted into both the ASU Sports Hall of Fame and the CoSIDA Academic All-America Hall of Fame. Bloomquist has also served on USA Baseball’s Board of Directors since 2016 and is a two-time alum of Team USA.
Bloomquist has been involved in community efforts, including founding the Abe and Mac Fund with his wife, Lisa, to support patients with extended stays at Phoenix Children’s Hospital, and he was the Diamondbacks’ 2012 Roberto Clemente Award nominee. In 2018, the Diamondbacks dedicated Willie Bloomquist Field in Tempe as part of the Diamonds Back Field Building program.
Testimonials from baseball figures describe Bloomquist’s impact and approach. Kirk Gibson, Pat Murphy, Paul Goldschmidt, and Kyle Seager each provide statements about his work ethic, leadership, communication, and influence on teammates and young players.
