Phoenix Volleyball Club offers Summer League, Tryouts, and Lessons for athletes. The program takes place at Sequoia High and includes instruction and activities led by experienced volleyball staff.
Phoenix Volleyball Club was founded by Jim Van Wicklin. After nearly 20 years of coaching for various clubs in Florida, Tennessee, and Arizona, Jim Van Wicklin decided there was a need to establish a club. Phoenix Volleyball's stated goal is to help athletes be better both physically and mentally.
Staff credentials at Phoenix Volleyball Club include Gold Medal Squared; IMPACT; CAP I and II; NFHS; Regional; AIA; and USAV Certified Official. Coach Jim has led multiple teams to USA Volleyball Nationals, with many of his teams finishing in the top 10 in their respective division, and several of his teams have also attended AAU Nationals. In 2019 his 15-2's team took 3rd place at AAU Nationals. In 2020 he took a 3s-level team to a National Qualifier, where they entered ranked 83rd overall and finished the tournament 9-1 and in 3rd place. In 2022, one of the athletes he helped received a college scholarship and later helped her college win the D2 National Championship, and Jim has helped over 64 athletes achieve college scholarships. In 2022 he was selected as one of the two line judges for three divisions of the USAV 18s Junior National Championship match, and in 2022 and 2023 he was selected to be an R1 and R2 for the Girls and Boys Junior National Championships.
The program emphasizes the development of athletic abilities and helping athletes learn to manage anxiety, fear, and other emotions that come with competitive sports. Phoenix Volleyball Club states an emphasis on helping athletes be better both physically and mentally. Coach Jim is a strong user of statistical analysis in volleyball and uses stats to help in coaching decision-making. He has spent a large portion of the last two years focusing on anxiety in sports and how to help athletes overcome fear from competitive sports. Coach Jim is both an AIA and USAV Certified Official and officiates club, high school, and pro competition. The website, merchandise, logo, and other branding for Phoenix Volleyball Club were developed by Herbie Design.
