About

The Tutor/Mentor Program pairs foster youth with adult volunteers who spend time together playing sports, creating art, and meeting for lunch to chat about their week. Participants also take part in group events and may attend visits to the Arizona Science Center, the Phoenix Zoo, and Ballet Arizona. Mentors are volunteers who serve as role models and friends, and they are not behavioral coaches, life skills instructors, or counselors.

• Ages: 5–18 years old
• Schedule: Mentors commit to a minimum of one year.
• Price: No fees when using the PayPal Giving Fund to donate online.

The Tutor/Mentor Program is part of Arizonans for Children Inc., a 501(c)(3) non-profit that has been helping foster children since 2002. The program is for children ages 5–18 who are currently in DCS care within Maricopa County, and children must be placed within Maricopa County to enroll. Arizonans for Children reports that 95% of children in the Mentor Program show significant improvement in their academic performance and experience a noticeable rise in self-esteem. All of the organization’s programs rely on volunteers and community members to contribute time and financial resources, and community and cultural enrichment is offered through group events and donated tickets to places like the Arizona Science Center, the Phoenix Zoo, and Ballet Arizona.

Arizonans for Children lists its leadership team as: Nikki Robinson, Executive Director and President; Kaye McCarthy; Marina La Rosa, East Valley Coordinator; Casey Cruz, North Valley Coordinator; Lacey Calkins, West Valley Coordinator; and Monique Quinones, Mentor Program Supervisor. Arizonans for Children is identified as a Qualifying Foster Care Charitable Organization under the Arizona Foster Care Tax Credit. A Fox 10 Kari Lake news story includes the statement, “Mentoring a foster child can help make a difference.”
