About

Heather Hill Riding Center offers English riding, Western riding, carriage driving, and general riding. The program also includes horsemanship, grooming, and horse care, with attention to understanding a horse’s body language. New riders begin with an introductory evaluation ride to determine fit, and the program uses a structured, lease-based training approach with consistent pairing of horse and rider.

• Ages: 6–18 years old

Heather Hill Riding Center has been serving Bay Area novice riders since 1997. Since 1997, Laura Stevens’ riding center has been described as the Bay Area’s premier program for new riders. The program is known for kind, steady Welsh ponies and Cobs, and it offers a highly personalized, individualized program that includes thoughtful horse management such as layups and senior horse care. Heather Hill Riding Center teaches both English and Western riding as well as carriage driving, and it emphasizes well-rounded horsemanship, thoughtful riding, and understanding a horse’s body language. Heather Hill Riding Center is described as a small, community-oriented barn with a close-knit community and personalized care for both horse and rider, and its philosophy centers on respect for the individual nature of each horse and student. One testimonial describes the presence of “true Horsemen and Horsewomen” who are “tucked away in quiet hidden places, working slowly and silently without national recognition or appreciation.”
