About

Heather Hill Riding Center offers English riding, Western riding, carriage driving, indoor arena sessions, outdoor riding, trail rides, mounted lessons, and groundwork. Riders work consistently with the same horse in a highly individualized program that includes a mix of mounted lessons and groundwork. The program uses kind, steady Welsh ponies and Cobs and follows a steady, relationship-based approach to working with horses.

• Ages: 5–18 years old

Heather Hill Riding Center has been serving Bay Area novice riders since 1997. Since 1997, Laura Stevens’ riding center has been described as the Bay Area’s premier destination for new riders. The program is intentionally small with limited space and is described as a small, community-oriented barn. Heather Hill Riding Center also offers a small number of full-care spots for retired horses or horses recovering from injury, with careful monitoring, individualized feed plans, and appropriate turnout for senior and layup horses.

Heather Hill Riding Center states that it is dedicated to putting novice students on the right path for a lifetime of enjoyable, fulfilling riding and is committed to excellence in horsemanship, a close-knit community, and personalized care for both horse and rider. Its philosophy centers on respect for the individual nature of each horse and student and a focus on well-rounded horsemanship, thoughtful riding, and understanding a horse’s body language. One testimonial describes the kind of horse professionals at the center by contrasting them with showy trainers and instead placing them among “true Horsemen and Horsewomen” who are “tucked away in quiet hidden places, working slowly and silently without national recognition or appreciation.”
