Foothill Shotokan Karate-Do is part of the Auburn Recreation District’s community service program and is sanctioned by Shotokan Karate of America, a non-profit organization founded in 1956. Training emphasizes karate as an art, not a sport, and follows traditional methodology handed down from master to master and generation to generation. Training encompasses physical, mental, and spiritual elements, and karate is taught as a unique school of self-improvement through rigorous and focused training. Traditional martial art forms of respect are practiced, including bowing at the door, beginning and ending each practice with rei (a bow), and students bowing when asking a senior a question about training. A senior black belt leads the class. In Shotokan Karate of America there are five white belt ranks (Kyu), three brown belt ranks, and five black belt ranks, and seniority is established primarily by starting date, but also by rank and number of special training programs attended. Those wishing to join Shotokan Karate of America receive a beginner’s handbook, access to the SKA website for members, eligibility to attend special trainings, the ability to test for ranks for free, and a newsletter. The only additional cost to members is the purchase of a white gi (uniform), which comes in light, tournament, and heavy duty weights, ranges in price starting at around $25–$30, includes a white belt, is available from the dojo gi manager, and must be kept clean and in good repair. Mr. Ohshima still leads Shotokan Karate of America from his home and central dojo in Santa Barbara.
