About

Free Math and Literacy Tutoring offers math tutoring, literacy tutoring, and SpellRead tutoring. The math program is based on the Jump Math curriculum, and the literacy program uses the SpellRead curriculum. Children in SpellRead tutoring practice their skills at home with their parents using cards or games provided by the teacher.

• Ages: 8–11 years old
• Schedule: 2 tutoring classes each week; most students attend for about 12–18 months with good attendance and home practice
• Price: We provide free tutoring for math and literacy.

The program provides free tutoring for math and literacy to students from the elementary schools that feed into Cole Harbour District High School and Auburn Drive High School. It offers math tutoring for children in grades 3–6 and literacy tutoring for students in grades 4 and under. Each child is placed in a group of 4–10 students working at the same level, and each group moves forward together, so regular attendance at every class is required. The program currently has a waiting list of 6–12 months. Classes are taught by a teacher, often with an assistant teacher or volunteer.

The Cole Harbour Foundation is a non-profit community foundation focused on improving education and opportunities for children and youth in and around Cole Harbour, Nova Scotia. The leadership team includes Paul Gauthier (Founder & President), Margaret David (Vice President), Shannon Jewers (Administrator), Kim MacDonald (Operations Manager), and committee members Dan Ray, Dean Stevenson, and Chris Rathwell. The foundation dates to 2016. Both the Jump Math and SpellRead curriculums are highly regarded, evidence based, and have demonstrated records of success.

The program works with several partners: Halifax Learning provides SpellRead literacy tutoring to a number of the students; Dr. Jamie Metsala from Mount Saint Vincent University provides input and guidance on outreach programs; Jump Math provides instructor training and curriculum for the math tutoring program; and the Dolly Parton Imagination Library selects and ships books for the kids’ books program. The foundation also mails free books every month to children under 5, awards scholarships to university, community college, or trade school, and provides teachers with classroom materials.
