Aztec Tennis Club Youth Tennis After School Program offers tennis coaching that includes forehand, backhand, volleys, serve, groundstrokes, and footwork. Participants take part in many drills that focus on technique, strategy, beginning and intermediate instruction, and team-level play.
• Ages: 5–16 years old
• Schedule: Beginners and Intermediate after-school drop-in, Monday through Thursday, 3:45–5:15 pm; Monday and Wednesday for Beginners, Tuesday and Thursday for Intermediates
• Price: $240 for 6 sessions; after-school tennis 3:45–5:15 pm $240.00 USD; single-time 3:45 pm drop-in $40.00 USD
The program is part of the Berkeley LEARNS program (Links Enrichment, Academics, and Recreation to the Needs of Students). It is directed by Berkeley native Carlton C. Jones and the Aztec Tennis staff. Mr. Jones is a USTA High-Performance Coach with more than two decades of experience, is a USPTA-certified professional, and holds a Master's degree in sports management. The leadership team includes Carlton C. Jones as head of the Aztec Tennis Club and director of the program; Coach PJ Mapamulo as teaching professional; Coach Faris Hadir as teaching professional and Aztec Travelling Coach; Coach Norm Sokalski as junior clinician and private lesson coach; Coach Rishi Garbharran as professional tennis coach; and Coach Julian Rulofs-Jones as coaching professional. Coach PJ studied sports management in Durban KZN and is a USPTA Certified Pro. Coach Rishi is a United States Professional Tennis Association (USPTA) Certified Professional Tennis Coach and received the Virgil Cheek award at Missouri State University. Carlton was part of the USTA National's High Performance Class of 2000 and 1996, served as a USTA Junior Davis Cup coach in Columbia, South Carolina, and as 14S Zonal coach in Pompano Beach, Florida, was a national coach for the American Tennis Association, and was Director of the USTA Competitive Training Center.
