Berkeley Rep’s School of Theatre serves some 20,000 people a year and offers dynamic arts educational activities for Bay Area youth, along with immersive training for current and future theatre makers. Berkeley Repertory Theatre has provided a welcoming home for emerging and established artists since 1968 and has grown from a storefront stage to an international leader in innovative theatre. Over 6 million people have attended more than 500 shows at Berkeley Rep, including 90 world premieres, and its productions have gone on to win eight Tony Awards, nine Obie Awards, eleven Drama Desk Awards, one Grammy Award, one Pulitzer Prize, and other honors. Berkeley Rep creates ambitious theatre that entertains and challenges its audiences, provokes civic engagement, and inspires people to experience the world in new and surprising ways. In 2012, Berkeley Rep launched The Ground Floor: Center for the Creation and Development of New Work, and in 2021 it launched In Dialogue, a program that uses its theatre-making skills and resources in service of the community and develops long-term collaborations with local, socially centered organizations. Berkeley Rep presents an annual seven-play season with up to four special event presentations that feature diverse artistic voices, themes, and perspectives, and it seeks to model responsible environmental behavior as a green organization.
