About
Cal Sports Camps offers sport-specific training that includes basketball, dry-land stretching routines for divers, technical work for diving, stroke technique for swimming, in-water training, dry-land conditioning, and classroom content and discussions for swimming. Certain basketball camps also provide each camper with a Cal camp t-shirt and additional prizes, and campers at several camps are evaluated upon arrival and grouped by age and ability.
• Ages: 6–18 years old
• Schedule: Cal Kids Camp meets Monday–Thursday from 9:00AM–4:00PM, with check-in on Monday at 8:30AM; Bear for a Day Camp meets on Saturday from 9:00AM–4:00PM, with check-in at 8:30AM.
• Price: Lunch at Bear for a Day Camp is available for purchase at registration for $5, and camp prices are subject to increase as camp exceeds 25%/50%/75% capacity.
Cal Kids Camp is designed for young players who want to learn the fundamentals in a fun environment and is open to participants of all abilities, restricted only by gender and age. Bear for a Day is the most intensive Cal Girls Basketball Camp and is geared toward more serious basketball players. All Cal Sports Camps are open to any and all entrants, and most camps have an athletic trainer on-site to help with illness or injury. Suggested items to bring include athletic on-court clothing, athletic shoes, a water bottle, a packed lunch and snacks, and a small gym bag or backpack, and for Cal Kids Camp lunch is not provided, while Bear for a Day offers lunch for purchase at registration for $5 with multiple options. US Sports Camps is not responsible for lost or stolen articles or money.
The program leadership includes head and assistant coaches and camp directors from multiple Cal sports, such as Charmin Smith as Head Coach for women’s basketball, Eliza Pierre as Camp Director for women’s basketball, Tess Romine-Black as Associate Camp Director and Director of Basketball Operations for women’s basketball, and Mark Madsen as Head Coach for men’s basketball. Additional leaders include Al Acosta for women’s crew, Scott Frandsen for men’s crew, Tara and Steve Danielson as co-directors of field hockey camps, Nancy McDaniel for golf, Geralen Stack-Eaton and Bryan Del Castillo for gymnastics, Ned Webster and Jennifer Wong for men’s and women’s lacrosse, Jack Clark for men’s rugby, Leonard Griffin and Neil McGuire for men’s and women’s soccer, Kris Kwinta for men’s tennis, Jen Malcom and Meagan Owusu for indoor and beach volleyball, and Kirk Everist and Coralie Simmons for men’s and women’s water polo. Staff credentials include national and conference awards, such as Jack Clark leading the rugby team to 24 National Championships in 15s and five National Championships in rugby 7s, Leonard Griffin being named Pac-12 coach of the year following the 2023 season, and several coaches receiving individual honors like Charmin Smith’s coaching awards, Eliza Pierre’s inclusion on Silver Waves Media's Top 50 Most Impactful Women's Assistants list in June 2024, and Heidi Heintz’s recognition in the 2019 WBCA Thirty Under 30. The Race for Change initiative connected to the program’s leadership raised over $30,000 for Cal’s Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging Justice Office, and Cal Athletics has entered into a three-year agreement with Nike and BSN SPORTS. The stated goals for specific sport camps include helping campers take their game to the next level and create lasting friendships at Cal Baseball Camp, advancing skills by working with top coaches and competing against top talent at Cal Football Camp, welcoming all levels from beginner to advanced at Cal Diving Camp, and helping participants become more effective and passionate swimmers at the California Swim Camp.
