Green Stuff Summer Camp
UC Botanical Garden at UC Berkeley, 200 Centennial Drive, Berkeley, CA 94720
About
Green Stuff Summer Camp is an active hands-on science day camp where campers learn about plant adaptations and habitat diversity, collect seeds in the Crops of the World Garden, and grow their own plants. Campers become young botanists by examining plants under microscopes, keep a nature journal, and create arts and crafts from plant materials. Daily activities include hunting for garden animals such as birds, butterflies, newts, lizards, and compost critters, hiking and investigating a different part of the Garden every day, and taking part in discovery walks, animal hunts, stories, science investigations, crafting with plants, and growing seeds.
• Ages: 6–11 years old
• Schedule: One-week sessions, Monday–Friday, with most summer camp days running 9:00 am–3:00 pm and some sessions and seasonal camps running 9:00 am–2:00 pm
• Price: Campers entering grades 1–2: $500 per week; aftercare 2:00–3:00 pm for these weeks: $100; campers entering grades 3–4: $525 per week; campers entering grades 5–6 (Alumni Camper Week): $525 per week
Green Stuff Summer Camp is described as UCBG’s award-winning nature camp and is part of the UC Botanical Garden at UC Berkeley, which is administered by the Office of the Vice Chancellor for Research and is a member of UC Berkeley’s Natural History Museum Consortium that is open to the public. The camp is primarily an outdoor, small-group experience with two counselors supervising 10 to 12 children per week, and it includes a special Alumni Week for returning campers entering grades 5 and 6. The counselors are a team of one lead staffer with a degree and experience in childhood education paired with a well-trained UC Berkeley undergraduate or graduate student in plant sciences, both of whom have experience and a love of sharing the wonders of the natural world with young children. Garden Members receive early access to register, all registrations are processed through an online system with an option to register by phone with a credit card, and the camp follows a one-week policy that limits registration to only one week per camper, with specific refund, transfer, and attendance policies stated in the camp information.
