Green Stuff Summer Camp
UC Botanical Garden at UC Berkeley, 200 Centennial Drive, Berkeley, CA 94720
About
Green Stuff Summer Camp is an award-winning, active hands-on science day camp where campers learn about plant adaptations and habitat diversity, collect seeds in the Crops of the World Garden, grow their own plants, and examine plants under microscopes. Campers keep a nature journal, create arts and crafts from plant materials, go on discovery walks and hikes to investigate different parts of the Garden each day, and take part in animal hunts for birds, butterflies, newts, lizards, and compost critters. Daily activities also include stories, science investigations, crafting with plants, and growing seeds.
• Ages: 6–11 years old
• Schedule: One-week sessions, Monday–Friday, with camp hours varying by grade level between 9:00 am–2:00 pm or 9:00 am–3:00 pm, plus seasonal camps from 9:00 am–2:00 pm
• Price: Campers entering grades 1–2: $500 per week with optional aftercare 2:00–3:00 pm for $100; campers entering grades 3–4: $525 per week; campers entering grades 5–6 (Alumni Camper Week): $525 per week; refunds minus a $100 cancellation fee are available only for cancellations made before May 1st
Green Stuff Summer Camp follows a one-week policy that limits registration to only one week per camper, with 2026 summer sessions listed in one-week blocks such as June 1–5, June 8–12, June 15–19, June 22–26, July 6–10, July 13–17, July 20–24, July 27–31, August 3–7, and August 10–14. Three weeks (June 22–26, July 13–17, July 20–24) are noted as having overlapping cohorts to allow families to send children the same week, and an aftercare option is available so younger campers can end at 3:00 pm. Green Stuff Seasonal camps are noted as new for 2026.
Each small group includes two counselors supervising 10 to 12 children per week, with one lead staffer who has a degree and experience in childhood education paired with a well-trained UC Berkeley undergraduate or graduate student in plant sciences, and both counselors have experience sharing the natural world with young children. Green Stuff Summer Camp is described as UCBG’s award-winning nature camp and is part of the UC Botanical Garden’s mission to maintain a diverse living collection of plants, support teaching and worldwide research in plant biology, further the conservation of plant diversity, and promote public understanding and appreciation of plants and the natural environment. As part of UC Berkeley, the Garden is administered by the Office of the Vice Chancellor for Research and is a member of UC Berkeley’s Natural History Museum Consortium, and more than 500 children from local public schools attend free educational tours there annually. All registrations are processed through an online system or by phone with a credit card at (510) 664-7606, campers are required to have enough self-control skills to safely navigate the Garden and participate as a group, and health form requirements and policies are outlined in a Health Form completed by families in April.
