About

Classroom Matters Tutoring and Academic Coaching offers academic coaching, tutoring, test prep, high-dosage tutoring, co-working, and executive functioning support. The program provides K–12 reading, writing, English, math, humanities, and all-subjects K–8 tutoring, along with AP English, AP US History, AP World History, AP Chemistry, and AP Calculus support. Students and families can also access college applications and essays tutoring, life skills tutoring, IEP and 504 Plan advocacy, parent coaching, adult ADHD and executive function coaching, and a range of workshops, including High-Impact Study Strategies, High School 101, EF workshops for grades 6–12, summer workshops, summer writing programs, and test prep workshops such as SAT, HSPT, HSPT/ISEE/SSAT, and SAT verbal tutoring.

Since 2000, Classroom Matters Tutoring and Academic Coaching has focused on academic coaching, tutoring, test prep, and related services, and reports having served more than 15,650 students with support from over 40 tutors. Classroom Matters states that its philosophy is to approach each student holistically by addressing emotional, social, and cognitive aspects of academic life to foster metacognition and self-advocacy. The program describes its tutors as “Best of the Bay!” and notes that they are experienced and proven tutors from top universities in the United States and abroad, including university students, graduates, and credentialed teachers who are experts in their subject fields and trained in providing executive functioning support.

Classroom Matters reports that every staff member receives intensive and ongoing training in its philosophy and approach to learning, including how to support students with learning differences and cultivate executive functioning skills. The organization describes its tutors as well-rounded mentors who care about their students and create respectful and productive relationships with them, and notes that families feel supported and well-served. Classroom Matters offers parent coaching for ADHD, including free parent coaching consults, as well as ADHD affinity groups for kids of all ages starting in October 2023, which are described as spaces for exploration, acceptance, and unconditional positive regard.

Individual staff credentials include Alejandro Jimenez, who began tutoring as a senior at UC Berkeley and later earned a Master’s in Education from Harvard Graduate School of Education in the Technology Innovation Education concentration. Alex Cruz holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Women’s and Gender Studies, a Master’s Degree in Ethnic Studies, and a post-baccalaureate certificate in the Teaching of Composition. Ali Vaughan holds dual degrees from Stanford University in Art Practice and Art History, Amanda Burke holds degrees from UC Berkeley in Art and American Studies, and Anna Henning attended CSU Monterey Bay majoring in Environmental Studies with a concentration in Education and is completing a Teaching Credential and Master’s in Inspired Teaching at National University.

Classroom Matters notes that it works with all ages of students and all types of learners, and that students regularly refer their friends to the program. Staff community involvement includes Amanda Burke directing and working with local community programs that combat white supremacy and serve youth, and Alex Cruz volunteering for the Berkeley READS Adult and Family Literacy Program and spending time in the stacks at the Berkeley Public Library. Testimonials from parents describe Classroom Matters as providing support through Berkeley High, connecting students with excellent tutors, and offering support and advice to families, with several parents calling the program and specific tutors “lifesavers” and expressing appreciation for improved grades, professional and approachable staff, and ongoing support.
