Mersey Soccer Club was founded in 1985 and is entering its 40th year serving the North Berkeley community. The club is led by Julie Nachtwey, and Bill O'Donnell has accepted the role of director of coaching. Bill O'Donnell brings his expertise from Liverpool, England, where he led high school teams to great success. The club describes the “Golden Vision,” a term coined in honor of Everton legend Alex Young, as embodying its commitment to skillful, artistic soccer. The goal stated for Mersey Soccer Club at its founding was to provide a professional introduction to the world's most popular team sport.

Mersey Soccer Club is an affiliate club within the Albany-Berkeley Soccer League, which hosts a membership of over 2,600 players. As part of District 4 of the California Youth Soccer Association (CYSA), the Albany Berkeley League is among 15 leagues within the district, which collectively hosts around 25,000 players, and CYSA oversees approximately 12,000 teams and more than 200,000 players. The club notes that the River Mersey is a historic waterway stretching about 70 miles from Manchester to Liverpool Bay, and that along its banks are the homes of four English Premier League clubs: Everton, Liverpool, Manchester City, and Manchester United.
